Laura Branigan is a singer and, increasingly, an actress from Brewster, New York, who first gained notice when she became a backup singer for Leonard Cohen in 1977. Branigan achieved considerable popular success in the early '80s by applying her big, powerful voice to translated versions of Eurodisco hits. She was less successful with subsequent recordings in the second half of the '80s, though by then she had begun to appear on television and in films. ~ William Ruhlmann, All-Music Guide
